Everyone deserves safety, dignity, and respect. If you or someone you know experiences sexual violence or harassment, dating or domestic violence, or stalking it can be hard to know where to go. You are not alone. Learn more about the different types of resources at Virginia Tech and in the community.
Graduate Student Support
The following offices at VT and in the community provide different support and resource options for graduate students.
Sexual Violence Prevention and Education: The SVPE mission is to promote a culture of respect and safety at Virginia Tech by cultivating healthy, supportive relationships on an individual level and collective level. SVPE empowers graduate students to address sexual violence through a community-oriented lens. We offer a variety of programs and workshops, with dedicated staff providing prevention efforts for all graduate students.
Cook Counseling Center*: Provides counseling services and support groups to graduate and undergraduate students. For more information, call 540-231-6557.
TimelyCare*: Graduate and undergraduate students have access to on-demand mental health support 24/7 through TalkNow, telehealth counseling for up to 12 sessions per academic year, and unlimited health coaching. Register for TimelyCare.
Schiffert Health Center*: Provides confidential medical support to graduate and undergraduate students. To make an appointment, call 540-231-6444.
CARES (Campus Advocacy, Resources, and Education for Survivors) Program*: A confidential resource that provides support and advocacy services for graduate and undergraduate students. Support includes information and accompaniment to Title IX investigations/meetings, Student Conduct meetings, assistance with criminal and civil legal proceedings, academic support, and information and resources following sexual violence. Dean of Students: Connects the campus community, including graduate and undergraduate students, with support and resources. Contact dean.students@vt.edu.
Graduate School Ombud Office*: The Ombuds for the Graduate School helps members of the Graduate School community engage in and manage conflict in a constructive way. The Ombuds provides a confidential location to discuss experiences with sexual violence. For more information, call 540-231-9573 or email gradombud@vt.edu.
Carilion New River Valley Medical Center*: Community medical center that offers emergency medical care, forensic Physical Evidence Recovery Kit (PERK) exams, and preventative care against sexually transmitted infection (STI) and pregnancy, including emergency contraception. For more information, call 540-731-2866.
New River Valley Women’s Center*: Provides programs and services to adult and child victims of sexual and domestic violence, including emergency advocacy, counseling, information on options available and accompaniment to the hospital or with law enforcement. Call the office at 540-639-9592. Call their 24-Hour Crisis hotline at 540-639-1123.
Response and Investigation Resources
When sexual violence occurs, there are multiple avenues for investigations:
Law Enforcement
These departments handle the legal aspect of a crime being committed. Depending on the location that the crime occurs, a different law enforcement agency will respond.
In an emergency, dial 911.
VT Police Department: If the assault occurs on Virginia Tech property, VTPD will handle law enforcement responsibilities. Call 540-231-6411 or the non-emergency phone at 540-382-4343.
Blacksburg Police Department: Call 911 for emergencies or the 24-hour non-emergency number at 540-443-1400.
Virginia Tech Title IX Office: Coordinates responses to all reports of sex discrimination made to Virginia Tech. This may include coordinating investigations and offering supportive measures. Email angelamc@vt.edu or call 540-231-1824. Fill out a reporting form.
Office of Student Conduct: Addresses student conduct that is inconsistent with university expectations and the Student Code of Conduct and resolves interpersonal, organizational, and community conflicts. For more information, email studentconduct@vt.edu or call 540-231-3790.
